Santa Barbara Chamber Players came into existence during the pandemic, when local professional musicians gathered to make music in their homes as live public performances were shut down. In January of this year, with help from the Towbes Fund for the Performing Arts, the Santa Barbara Foundation, the Santa Barbara Bowl Foundation, and the Music Academy, the orchestra gave its first public performance, an unqualified success by any standard.

Just as video games have become more sophisticated and detailed, so has the music composed for video games, with lush orchestral scores written to fit an individual's gameplay. Correspondent Conor Knighton looks at how the field of video game music has exploded, featuring Emmanuel Fratianni and the Utah Symphony in concert.

The classic orchestral tale of boy versus wolf is coming to the Covey Center for the Arts for one night only. The Utah Symphony brings “Peter and the Wolf Live!” to Provo on Friday night in a multimedia concert featuring the symphony and a live screening of the 2006 Oscar-winning animated short film of the tale.

Emmanuel Fratianni conducts the 70-piece Hollywood Scoring Orchestra at the preview opening ala of the new Tom Bradley International Terminal at LAX on June 20.

In what marked possibly the first world premiere of a symphonic poem ever to take place at an airport, the Hollywood Scoring Orchestra provided a once-in-a-lifetime musical experience at Los Angeles International Airport with the debut of “Portale – A symphonic Poem”, especially composed by Emmanuel Fratianni and Laurie Robinson.

Fratianni has led, and has had his compositions performed by, some of the world’s most prestigious orchestras; this month, he conducts the North Carolina Symphony in a performance of “Video Games Live,”

The National Symphony Orchestra was stellar, conducted with elegance and mirth by Emmanuel Fratianni. They were gleefully cheered on as they had to perform the music, sound effects and all, while select members of the audience got on stage and played super smash brothers live. It is hard to imagine a better way to expose young people to the wonder of the orchestra as with music that they already love and appreciate.

A video game score performed by a major orchestra in a concert hall? How about a video game score sitting at #8 – with a "bullet" – on the Billboard Classical/Crossover Top Ten? Not likely, you'd say – but you'd be wrong. Husband and wife Emmanuel Fratianni and Laurie Robinson's music on EMI Classics' album Video Games Live, Vol. 1 has not only achieved these milestones, but is bringing a whole new generation into the world's great concert halls. As this week's Billboard ranking may suggest, not since Mozart's music was performed in the comic opera of Vienna, has the music of the vernacular crossed over to such popular demand.
